Living and writing for and in Greece in the first quarter of the 21st century

Modern Greek author Iakovos Anyfantakis (Iraklion/Crete, 1983) will speak at the Laboratory of Modern Greek Studies Myrsini Zorba/Sapienza University of Rome, followed by an open discussion with students and the public.
The event explores how contemporary Greek life—shaped by economic, social, and cultural upheavals—forms the backdrop for new voices in literature.

Iakovos Anifantakis is a Greek writer from Crete, born in 1983. He holds a PhD from Panteion University in Athens, where his research focused on the representation of the Greek coup d’état and the Civil War in contemporary fiction. His literary work centers on themes of social change, memory, identity, and the generational impact of economic and political crises.

He made his debut in 2013 with the short-story collection Foxes on the Hillside, followed by Beautiful Loves in 2017 (Amori belli, trad. di V. Sebastio, In Breve-BesaMuci Editore, 2025). His first novel, Some Others (2019), received critical attention for its portrayal of young people navigating crisis and migration. His most recent book is Rebel Loves (2025). Anifantakis is considered one of the notable voices of the new generation of Greek authors exploring the transformations of modern Greek society.
